kick counting

Mama, have you ever just stopped what you were doing because you felt a little nudge from inside?

Maybe you were lying in bed, scrolling on your phone, and suddenly - there it was.

A tiny kick. A reassuring roll. A flutter that made you smile. 🥹💜

Feeling your baby move is one of the most magical (and let’s be real, sometimes weird!) parts of pregnancy. It’s like your little one is saying, “Hey, Mama, I’m here!” But did you know that these movements are more than just sweet moments? They’re actually an important way to check on your baby’s health!

This is where kick counting comes in. It’s a simple but powerful way to keep track of your baby’s well-being - just by paying attention to their movements. Let’s dive into what kick counting is, why it matters, and how you can make it part of your daily routine.

What Is Kick Counting?

Kick counting (also called fetal movement tracking) is exactly what it sounds like—keeping track of how often your baby moves in the womb. These movements include kicks, rolls, jabs, or even those little swishes that make you stop and smile.

Starting around 28 weeks, doctors recommend that you count how long it takes to feel 10 movements. Most babies will reach 10 kicks within two hours - often much sooner. If something feels off, like a sudden decrease in movement, it could be a sign that your baby needs a check-up.

Why Is Kick Counting Important?

Mama, your baby’s movements are like their way of saying, “Hey, I’m okay in here!” That’s why tracking their kicks is so important. Here’s why it matters:

  • It helps you monitor your baby’s health. Regular movements mean your baby is getting enough oxygen and nutrients.

  • It helps you notice changes early. A sudden decrease in movement can sometimes signal distress, and catching it early could make all the difference.

  • It gives you peace of mind. Pregnancy is full of little worries, but knowing your baby is active and healthy can help ease some of that anxiety.

Still not sure if it’s necessary? Studies show that mothers who track their baby’s movements and report changes early have better pregnancy outcomes. So, yes, Mama - kick counting is that important!

How to Count Kicks: A Step-by-Step Guide

Don’t worry, Mama - kick counting is easy, and you don’t need any fancy apps (though they can be helpful!). Here’s a simple way to do it:

  • Pick a time when your baby is usually active. Many moms find that after meals or in the evening works best.

  • Get comfy. Sit or lie down somewhere quiet where you can focus on baby’s movements.

  • Start counting. Every kick, roll, twist, or flutter counts as one movement. (Hiccups don’t count!)

  • Track how long it takes to feel 10 movements. Most babies will do this within 2 hours—but many much sooner!

  • Repeat daily. Make it part of your routine!

Tips for Getting Your Baby to Move

Sometimes, your little one might be snoozing when you try to count. If you’re not feeling much movement, try these tricks:

  • Drink a cold glass of water - the temperature change can wake baby up!

  • Have a light snack - the sugar can give them a little energy boost.

  • Lay on your left side - this increases blood flow to baby and can encourage movement.

  • Play some music or talk to your baby - sometimes, they respond to sound!

When to Call Your Provider

Mama, trust your instincts. You know your baby’s patterns better than anyone. Call your doctor or midwife if:

  • Your baby hasn’t moved 10 times in 2 hours.

  • You notice a sudden decrease in movement from their usual pattern.

  • Something just feels off to you.

Never hesitate to reach out. It’s always better to check and have everything be okay than to ignore a potential issue.
