expecting parents spring

Ah, spring. The season of fresh starts, blooming flowers, and… nesting mode kicking into high gear. If you're expecting parents this spring, you’re probably feeling a mix of excitement, nerves, and maybe even a little bit of “Wait - am I ready for this?”

First of all, you are. But also - let’s make sure you feel as prepared as possible!

And I see you. I see the endless Google searches:

✔ “How to dress a newborn for spring weather?”

✔ “Best baby gear for warmer weather?”

✔ “How to survive postpartum when allergies are wild?”

Spring comes with its own unique challenges (hello, unpredictable weather and pollen overload), so here’s what you need to know as you get ready to welcome your little one this season.

1. Dress for the (Unpredictable) Weather

Spring is tricky - it can be warm and sunny one day, then chilly and rainy the next. The key? Layering.

For your newborn:

  • Light, breathable layers like cotton onesies and muslin blankets keep them comfy without overheating.

  • A cozy hat and socks help regulate their temperature since little ones lose heat fast.

  • A lightweight swaddle is perfect for nap time without being too hot.

For you:

  • A comfy, breathable outfit for labor (hospitals can be chilly!)

  • A light robe or sweater for postpartum snuggle

  • Slip-on shoes - because bending over in the third trimester? Nope.

2. Allergies & Air Quality – Keep Baby’s Space Fresh

Spring means pollen. And while your newborn isn’t running through fields of flowers just yet, keeping their environment allergy-friendly is key.

  • Wash baby’s clothes and blankets before use to remove allergens.

  • Use an air purifier to keep indoor air clean and fresh.

  • Skip strong scents - fragranced detergents and candles can be overwhelming for newborns.

  • Keep windows closed on high pollen days (check your weather app for alerts).

And if you’re dealing with pregnancy allergies? Safe options like saline nasal sprays and a HEPA filter in your bedroom can help. Always check with your provider before taking any medication!

3. Outdoor Walks? Yes, Please! (With a Few Precautions)

Spring is perfect for getting outside with your baby—fresh air, gentle sunshine, and a change of scenery after months of nesting indoors. Just remember:

  • Avoid direct sunlight for babies under 6 months (their skin is super delicate).

  • Use a stroller shade or wide-brimmed hat for protection.

  • Dress appropriately - cool but covered to prevent overheating.

  • Babywearing? Choose a lightweight carrier so you both don’t overheat.

A short walk can do wonders for your mood (hello, postpartum hormones) and help ease those long newborn days and nights.

4. Plan Your Hospital or Birth Center Route (Without the Pothole Surprise)

Spring isn’t just about flowers - it’s also pothole season (seriously, why does winter do this to our roads?). If you’re heading to a hospital or birth center, do a practice drive so you’re not caught off guard.

  • Know your fastest, smoothest route (because who wants a bumpy ride while in labor?).

  • Check for construction delays (springtime roadwork is no joke).

  • Have a backup plan in case traffic is unpredictable.

5. Spring Cleaning? Keep It Baby-Safe

Nesting + spring = the ultimate urge to clean EVERYTHING. But with a baby on the way (or already here), you’ll want to be mindful of harsh chemicals and allergens.

  • Wash and organize baby clothes (but don’t remove every tag - you might need to swap sizes).

  • Prep your postpartum essentials - stock up on things like mesh undies, peri bottles, and easy snacks.

  • Set up a simple diapering station - one upstairs, one downstairs if you can!

And if the urge to deep clean hits at 2 AM? Maybe just start small with a drawer or two. You’ll thank yourself later.

6. Postpartum Planning – Don’t Forget About YOU

Your baby isn’t the only one who needs care after birth - you do too. Make a plan for your own recovery and support.

  • Line up help - whether it’s a postpartum doula (from HPD!), a meal train, or family support.

  • Stock up on easy-to-eat foods - think protein bars, frozen meals, and snacks you can eat with one hand.

  • Stock up on postpartum essentials - think pads, comfy loungewear.

  • Make rest a priority (yes, even when the sunshine tempts you to do all the things).

  • Join a postpartum support group - because adjusting to parenthood can be overwhelming, and you deserve a space to talk about it.
